Plus-size fashion just got a new contender
And she’s kind of a big deal.
2.16.2016
Last December Gossip lead singer Beth Ditto rocked the fashion world, twice. First, with her collab with Jean Paul Gaultier – an edgy oversized tee with Gaultier’s iconic take on lingerie with a corset printed on the front and back T-shirt – and second, with her announcement that she would be releaseing a plus-size clothing line.
Ditto has walked the runway for Gaultier as well as Marc Jacobs and collaborated with other brands on clothing lines in the past. But this collection marks her first solo project.
On Monday, Ditto unveiled her collection with a presentation at New York Fashion Week. And now, the line is (finally) available to the public.
Ditto’s debut collection consists of 11 items, an array of 11 fashions ranging from lipstick- printed dresses to sultry, semi-sheer, sultry jumpsuits. Available in U.S. sizes 14 to 28, the garments range in price from $65 to $395 and can be purchased at Bethditto.com or in at Selfridges in the U.K.
Back inIn December, Ditto told Women’s Wear Daily that her line was “inspired by her love of vintage,” something we can quite clearly see in her collection with thethis collection of vibrant prints and colors, curve-hugging dresses, and embroidered denim. Photographer Ezra Petronio and Love magazine editor Katie Grand further further helped Ditto capture its that? vintage feel with her campaign, donning the models in the red lips and -lipped, short-bobbed stylingshort bobs and with Polaroid-esque photography. of her campaign.
As a curvy woman herself, Ditto wanted to design other plus-size women high-quality clothes that would make other plus-size women them feel cool and comfortable. “I want it to be versatile, and to look good on every single body; it’s very fit- and shape-focused, and I wanted everything to be durable,” she told Refinery29. Available in U.S. sizes 14 to 28, the garments range in price from $65 to $395 and can be purchased at Bethditto.com or at Selfridges in the U.K.
Dittos’ line matches her vision for the future of the plus-size fashion industry – less fewer generic, shapeless items and more bold-patterned, curve-defining garments. Making this change in the industry, however, is will take more than just creating a wider range of clothes to choose from — Iit’ll take a much more accepting, less “fat-shaming” attitude towards the plus-size community for things to truly be more equal among those above and below a size 12. “I wish that people would stop equating fat people with laziness, and with being unhealthy,” Ditto told Refinery29. “I hope that will be reflected in fashion lines that cater to big people."
This could be a shift we are already starting to see with Ashley Nell Tipton, the first ever plus-size designer to win Project Runway. Ever so slowly, we are starting to see plus-size fashions make their ways onto the runway.
Hoping to continue to provide curvy women with retro fashion, Ditto is already working on her second collection. Make sure to be on the lookout for its release date —, she’s got some big ideas.
